Wie Algen die Sexualität erklären — Buchvorstellung von Andreas Deutsch

Wednesday, 11 November 2026 · 7:00 pm

COSMO Wissenschaftsforum, Kulturpalast Dresden · Schloßstraße 2, Dresden

Prof. Dr. Andreas Deutsch presents his book Urformen der Sexualität, which traces the life and work of botanist Nathanael Pringsheim (1823–1894). His microscopic observations of fertilization in algae helped establish sexual reproduction as a fundamental principle of life.

The book also explores Pringsheim’s family history, connections to Thomas Mann, and the beginnings of modern experimental biology. The reading marks the recent publication of the English edition, Archetypes of Sex: Unmasking Algae’s Innocence, the Nathanael Pringsheim Revolution.

The first review of the English edition, by marine biologist Ferdinando “Nando” Boero, is forthcoming in Marine Ecology. It discusses Pringsheim’s contributions to reproductive biology and the continuing importance of observing living organisms.
